Benefits of workplace training and skills development for the employer and the employee are undoubtedly empowering and makes good financial sense as Government has put in place Employment Tax Incentives (ETI) for the businesses that comply with the Skills Development Act.

All companies who have an annual payroll in excess of R500 000 and who are registered with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) must also register with SARS to pay the skills development levy, totalling 1% of the value of the company’s monthly salary and wage expenditure.

All registered companies are then allocated a particular SETA based on the core business undertaking of the company (i.e. their primary sector of engagement in industry). Companies also need to submit an Annual Training Report (ATR) and a Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) every year.

Benefits of training and skills development:

  1. Tax incentives to employers for participating in programmes dedicated to the transfer and development of skills
  2. Increases the productivity and efficiency of staff
  3. Improves the quality of production and thus an increase in revenue
  4. Increased efficiencies in processes, resulting in financial gain
  5. Improving employability and employment levels
  6. Increased job satisfaction, morale and motivation
  7. Increased capacity to adopt new technologies and methods
  8. Reduced employee turnover
  9. Enhanced company image
  10. Reduces risk of workplace injuries due to unnecessary mistakes and thus saving money on insurance claims, staff absenteeism, liability claims, retraining, loss of production time and more.
